Nokia Lumia 510 Review

Introduction

Today in our spot light we have the smart looking Nokia Lumia 510. Carrying the Microsoft flagship Nokia Lumia 510 is Windows based smart phone comes with Windows Phone 7.s Mango. Was released in November 2012, similar to its other sibling of Lumia family Nokia Lumia 510 is a mid range smart phone. It offers decent features and trendy design. May be market is not so up for Windows base OS smart phones but it is noticed that Nokia Lumia has revamp the windows craze in market again. We think that competition is quiet tuff between Android smart phones and Apple OS but now Nokia Lumia with Microsoft windows OS had made it even more difficult. Smart phone users have already start shifting towards Lumia due to the famous windows compatibility and user-friendly interface.

Nokia Lumia 510 can be classified as the young generation smart phone. It looks and felt very stylish in hand. Design is not new but the clear front black screen and bright back covers makes it more trendy and young. Nokia Lumia 510 offers great 4 inches touch screen with bright display powered with Adreno 200 Graphic processor. Camera is 5Mega Pixel with all the basic features, and it’s pretty good for instant pictures. Lumia 510 comes with a 4GB internal storage for all the multimedia and data to carry. Beside that it also offers 7GB sky drive storage, sound great.

Nokia Lumia 510 has a decent CPU consist of Qualcomm 800 MHz Snapdragon. It is quiet good with touch responses and other tasks but it sure limits to its capacity. For Music playback and longer running life Nokia Lumia 510 comes with a Li-Ion 1300 mAh battery with gives a decently 6-8 hour talk time and a good 38 hours of music.

Design and Built

Nokia Lumia 510 carries the same curvy design as Nokia Lumia 610 and 710 but Lumia 510 is smaller and lighter in weight, just 129gms. Body is slim and builds with strong plastic, felt solid in hands. There are no losing fittings or plastic squeaks while we test it. Back cover of Nokia Lumia 510 is felt as rubber coated surface which makes it fit in hand, no chance of slipping out or fall.

Front side of Nokia Lumia 510 has no physical buttons, Back, Home and Search all are captive touch button placed below the screen. Proximity sensor is just above the screen and Mic is also placed on the front lower end. Looking on the top side of Nokia Lumia 510 there is only a 3.5mm audio jack whereas MicroUSB port is place bottom of it. Right side of Nokia Lumia 510 holds a volume rocker, lock/unlock key and a dedicated camera key. All these buttons are comfortable to use and their responses are good. Nothing is found or place on left side of Nokia Lumia 510. On the back side it has camera lance and Nokia logo.

Nokia Lumia 510 holds decent perfection just like any high end smart phone. The only issue is to keep it clean as it’s a finger print magnet, specially in black color. Nokia currently offer White, Cyan, Black, Red, and Yellow for Lumia 510. All colors are vibrant and adds stylish look to it.

Performance

Nokia Lumia 510 is an entry level smart phone with decent speed and multi tasking performance. It has an 800 MHz Qualcomm MSM7227A Snapdragon CPU which runs everything smooth. From normal phone usage to all the multimedia and applications it delivers fairly decent speed. On continuous usage Nokia Lumia 510 start lacking and freezes a lot due to its limitations of internal memory. Nokia Lumia 510 comes with 256 MB RAM only. Response of multi touch or swipes are good but if it starts freezing then it becomes a hassle. With low range windows smart phone Nokia Lumia 510 is a good feature bundle but we expected it to be stronger on performance aspects.

Display

Nokia Lumia 510 offers a good 4 inch captive touch screen with 65K colors 480 x 800 pixels. Menus and interface seems quite clear and comfortable to eyes. Nokia Lumia 510 display is powered by Adreno 200 graphic processor which makes multimedia experience decently fair. Though it is not the best as compare to other smart phone but with its low price low display quality can be bearable. Nokia surely can enhance the display experience but price seems to be the barrier for Lumia 510.

Camera

Nokia Lumia 510 comes with 5MP Camera with auto focus. Camera performance is fair as it deliver fair quality pictures. While taking images Nokia Lumia 510 camera constrains due to images quality due to noise and low light issues. As we already mentioned that it’s an entry level smart phone so camera also has its limitation. For users who constantly take pictures frequently find Nokia Lumia 510 interesting as social media upload is fun on Nokia Lumia 510. Beside Auto focus it also has face detection and touch focus which becomes very handy features while take a quick picture.

Video capability of Nokia Lumia 510 is fair, it captures motion picture in VGA quality @30frames per second. Not bad for a smart phone with average features. While testing the video recording we find the video quality not that good but it’s fair enough. Audio and video both felt much synchronized but the lack can be noticeable. For a lower price smart phone Nokia Lumia 510 camera quality doesn’t seem to be a big issue.

OS and Other Features

Nokia Lumia 510 comes with Microsoft Windows Phone 7.5 Mango. Though it is not the latest version offered but has all the great features expected from Windows phone OS. Home screen and interface are very interactive and fun to play with. A Multi touch capability adds more life to Nokia Lumia 510. While working on application we find Windows phone very user friendly. For users who are looking to move on smart phone for the first time will definitely fall in love with WP 7.5 Mango. The great option of Microsoft Active Sync comes very useful when connecting to Microsoft Windows XP, Vista or 7 based computers or laptops. Data transfer becomes swift as users can easily drag and drop item from PC to Nokia Lumia 510 or vice versa.

Nokia Lumia 510 great usability is the internet browsing and the Ms Office applications. Internet capabilities are great and web pages rendering is decently fast. Text on websites seems quite clear and multi touch allows the zoom in and out options very smooth. One of the most frequent usable features is Ms Office support we find it great. Office file can be view and edited within few seconds once user get use to the touch screen.

Due to the Windows Phone platform Nokia Lumia 510 do limits on apps availability as compare to Android OS. It is not the deal breaker issue as low price and decent features are Nokia Lumia 510’s major catch.

For Data storage Nokia Lumia 510 comes with an internal 4GB memory which seems fairly good but it may becomes a problem if required more space. There is no microSD slot present in Nokia Lumia 510 and it is disappointing for users who usually keep data on memory cards. Beside this Nokia Lumia has Accelerometer capability, Stereo FM radio, Yes, Blue tooth v2.1 with A2DP and Yes, microUSB v2.0. With Standard 1300 mAh Lithium Ion battery Nokia Lumia 510 gives 6 to 8 hours of talk time and more than 30 hours of music play back.

Disadvantages

The major aspect where we think Nokia Lumia 510 could be much better is firstly it fair quality display. Nokia can offer a brighter display instead, may be low price category keeps Lumia 510 to specific limit. Beside display Performance and speed is just fair. Multi tasking becomes a challenge as Nokia Lumia has 256MB of RAM, quiet low if compare to other smart phones in competition. One if the most important lack of Nokia Lumia 510 is the missing microSD slot. In case of memory shortage there is no option to increase memory.
