Samsung Galaxy Pocket S5300 Review

Introduction

Samsung Galaxy series had added a great value to Samsung mobile so far. Since the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S III smart phone people around the world gets attentive to Samsung. From great features and amazing performance to wide price range, Samsung smart phones are selling like hot cakes and their sales graph is increasing day by day. So far the major credit goes to Samsung Galaxy S III sales which keep the brand on top for its increase in demand and it's also ruling as the smart phone king at present.

For toady we selected one of the low price smart phone form the Galaxy series The Samsung Galaxy Pocket. It's a small size smart phone which contains all the goodies users can get in a very less price. Samsung Galaxy Pocket was launched in April 2012 with a focus towards the buyers who wants a cheap touch phone with smart functionality. It's a bit small in size with decent features but due to limitations it does restrict users on certain things. Samsung Galaxy Pocket has all the basic android capabilities with good touch response but speed is a bit slower. We do understand that its basic android smart phone so expectations are less. Samsung Galaxy Pocket offers Android OS V2.3.6 Gingerbread with Touch Wiz UI. It also has a decent basic 2 MP camera and good 3GB internal storage.

Design

Samsung Galaxy Pocket is a very decent looking handset its name already reflects the smaller size due to the word “Pocket”. It's not something new as there are similar designs available with other brands as well as Samsung. Like Samsung Galaxy Y is of same size as Samsung Galaxy Pocket. The whole smart phone is built with plastic and it felt great in hand. The 2.8 inch touch screen display is pretty upright and works great with touch and multi swipes. Samsung Galaxy Pocket weights around 97g and can be said light in weight but it's not that slim.

Front side of Samsung Galaxy has three basic keys on lower side of screen, Home Menu and back keys. Top side has a 3.5mm audio jack and a microUSB port with a plastic cover for easy data handling. On the left side we find volume rocker with good response and a lanyard eyelet. On the right side of Samsung Galaxy Pocket we find the power/lock button only. Lower side has a micro phone pin and a slit to open battery cover.

Performance

Samsung Galaxy Pocket offers normal executing power for its limitations but with such cheap price it's fair enough. It comes with an 832 MHz ARM II v6 processor supported by 289 MB of RAM. We test all the basic application, multimedia etc and it turnout to be good. Android OS works smooth with all its features and we didn't find any lagging which can make this device low in performance. Touch response and multi swipes works fair. Screen resolution is less as it can be better but we think it's because of the cheap price that's why Samsung made it that way. Samsung Galaxy Pocket does have the power to compete similar smart phones of its price category and it performs well in most of its aspects.

Display

Samsung Galaxy Pocket comes with a 2.8 QVGA TFT touch screen with 256K – color resolution. Home screen looks clear and reasonably fine but we can't say it's great. Menus and apps looks ok as this is not a high end smart phone. Contrast and colors depth both seem pretty low and visibility in sunlight is not that great. Samsung Galaxy Pocket screen resolution is fine enough to let user enjoy their images, videos and games. Low Display is a slight problem but Samsung is not far behind from its competitors. Due to Samsung limitations we think it can be a prominent issue for some user but on the whole it works for most of them. At present Samsung Galaxy Pocket is widely choosen by Asian and European users.

Camera

Samsung Galaxy Pocket offers a basic 2MP camera with fixed focus. Its quiet clear that Galaxy Pocket is a cheap smart phone with limitations but Samsung could offer a better camera with in the same price. Camera captures reasonable pictures with average result. Colors and other details of the images stays ok but it require a little practice to capture clear photos otherwise it blurs a lot. Samsung Galaxy Pocket video performance is below average, it allows video recording on 15 frames per second. Its video and audio lacks a bit but mostly it works fine.

OS and Other Features

Samsung Galaxy Pocket comes with the famous but older Android OS v2.3.6 Gingerbread. Users find it great in running on this little Galaxy smart phone. Most of the pre-installed apps work smooth and no glitches were noticed on our continuous testing. Due to limitations and low end series smart phone there are restrictions of apps installations. Gingerbread offers very interactive UI and it runs smooth with Touch Wiz User interface. Swiping and multi touch functions are good and responsive but we can't say it fast.

Samsung Wi-Fi capabilities are average but it felt fair while we browse the internet. Viewing web pages and text is reasonable but low in quality. The Hotspot Functionality is a great feature which adds plus point to its WIFI capability. Samsung Galaxy Pocket has GPS function with A-GPS support it comes very useful while user is on roaming or travelling.

Samsung Galaxy Pocket also offers a decent Stereo FM radio with RDS. User can enjoy their favorite music station with 3.5mm audio jack which is one of the most useful features. Beside the Radio, Samsung Galaxy Pocket offers a good internal storage of 3GB with expandability up to 32GB through microSD slot. It's a great feature which allows user to store almost unlimited data of their videos, music, picture etc.

Disadvantages

Samsung Galaxy Pocket works great for most of its option and features. The noticeable disappointment of Samsung Galaxy Pocket is the low display resolution. Beside that the Android OS has the limitation to apps installation, Camera is in low quality and don't have any autofocus or other features. We also felt that dedicated camera key is missing which widely present in most of the smart phone these days. Video recording is poor in quality with its 15 fps.

Should you buy Samsung Galaxy Pocket?

We recommend Samsung Galaxy Pocket to the buyers who are looking for an average looking smart phone with basic Android functionality, and specially those who are looking for a cheap smart phone with simple UI. For built quality and size Samsung Galaxy Pocket is quiet durable and as compare to its price it doesn't look low in quality or cheap at all. In such low price there are very less smart phones that could compete with the Samsung Galaxy Pocket.

Samsung Galaxy Pocket is currently available in a price range of 99$ to 105$ depends on the service plans and the regional markets. We are sure that Samsung Galaxy Pocket is the perfect smart phone for buyers who less to spend and it is a great value device for such cheap price. So we recommend that go to the nearest phone seller in your area and ask for Samsung Galaxy Pocket. Check and try it yourself as we know with price so cheap Samsung Galaxy Pocket will definitely change your mind.

Overall we gave 7/10 rating to Samsung Galaxy Pocket.
